The Assignment
The result of the 6 commissioned artworks is an extension of my free work as a photographer/artist. Architecture and interior design are the unmistakable link between myself and the client. The challenge was to incorporate a subtle link into each work to one or more projects completed across the country. In doing so, the various departments within the company had to be featured as much as possible so that each work becomes, in a way, a personal representation for each person associated with it.
During my research, I discovered the work of architect and artist Marshall Brown. His vision holds that collage changes the terms of architectural authorship and challenges outdated definitions of originality. The works demonstrate the power of collage as an architectural medium. Despite its consistent presence in architectural practice since last century, collage was never considered a representative standard form like modeling, drawing and sketching.
Art and architecture unmistakably meet in these 6 major works, 130×200 cm each. There is the link to Roger Raveel’s post-expressionism in the work “The Worker,” where abstract and figurative go hand in hand.
But also the nod to magical realism and surrealism. The older drawings of Michael Borremans, as well as the work of Gideon Kiefer were always present sources of inspiration throughout the process.
Art vs. Business
This original process is a unique experience between client and artist. The client as a company invests in art where the business takes itself as the subject and partly contributes to the final result, where there was a lot of space and trust to create freely within a framework, with the necessary consultation along the way .
The result are 6 works of art in which the client and artist recognize themselves and which meet all the predetermined aesthetic, artistic and budgetary requirements.
Far too often companies still dive into the unknown when it comes to buying art where opinions are often divided and the amount is not used efficiently.
As a company investing in and working on art, it can be done….
